My first series was handheld, very carefully, at the minimum focus distance of .38m (15") without the matching closeup filter. For serious close work I prefer the Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/3.5.
Update: The new SL II S has built-in close focusing to .25m (9.8").
Shots are from f/2 to f/11, shown left to right then top to bottom. At close distances the lens improves all the way to f/11 if you need the depth of field.
The images are exactly as scanned except for resizing. No cropping, colour correction, saturation change, contrast control, chromatic aberration mitigation, grain reduction nor any other form of digital trickery has been employed.
